Information on and the History of Australian Shepherds

The Australian Shepherd is an intelligent, playful dog that is normally very good with children. A female will stand 18 - 21 inches and weigh 40 - 55 pounds, while a male is taller at 20 - 23 inches and normally weighs 50 - 65 pounds. Its coloring is black, blue merle, red, or red merle, with or without white markings.
History of the Australian Shepherd
Nicknamed the Aussie, the Australian Shepherd does not have its roots in Australia as its name suggests, but, actually originated in the United States where it was bred for sheep herding. Although it's not clear how the breed originated, some believe its ancestors came from the Basque people and that the original stock of the Australian Shepherd is that of the Pyrenean Shepherd and Border Collie. This breed of dog became popular after some were shown doing tricks at rodeos and in film in the 1950s.
Personality of the Australian Shepherd
Rugged and sturdy, the Australian Shepherd has a protective side and can work well as a watchdog. It has even been known to herd children to keep them where they're supposed to be. Easily trainable, the Australian Shepherd is very affectionate and cheerful and usually quite gentle with children which is why it is such a popular farm dog.
Exercise of the Australian Shepherd
With a great amount of stamina and its muscular build, the Australian Shepherd requires a vigorous amount of exercise everyday. This is a breed of dog that loves both mental and physical challenges. It is capable of working all day and doesn't lose speed as the day wears on.
How to Take Care of an Australian Shepherd
The Australian Shepherd has a medium length coat that is weather resistant with an undercoat. The coat is easy to manage and only needs brushing twice a week. After bathing, it is recommended to condition it with a coat-nourishing finish.
The most common health problem with the Australian Shepherd is eye defects with CEA, (Collie Eye Anomaly,) and cataracts being the most prevalent. The Australian enjoys a long life span with most living 12 - 15 years.
Enjoying the title of being the most agile of the herding breeds of dog, the Australian Shepherd makes a great farm dog. It loves to work and get its exercise. This handsome breed of dog generally does well with other animals, while keeping its caution with strangers. Most owners report that it is a great family dog.
