One of the oldest breeds of dogs, the Basenji, was discovered in Zaire, Africa. Also known as the Congo Dog, the name Basenji means "bush thing." Even though the Basenji is known as a barkless dog, it doesn't mean that the dog is silent. It is capable of giving out a good yodel and has been known to scream, (loudly at that!)
Description of the Basenji
The Basenji is a medium-size dog that belongs to the hound group and was originally used as a hunter. It has a height of 16 - 17 inches and weighs 22 - 24 pounds as an adult. The coloring of the Basenji can be red, pure black, brindle, or a combination of black and tan, with white markings. It's life span is 12 - 14 years.
Personality of the Basenji
The Basenji is a highly intelligent, independent dog that is capable of taking care of itself. It can be catlike in its mannerisms, including keeping itself clean. The Basenji loves to play and is a highly energetic dog that needs lots of exercise. It can be a bit stubborn at times making it somewhat challenging to train, although it tends to potty train easily.
Grooming of a Basenji
Maintenance is pretty easy with a Basenji. Because of its short coat, it only needs occasional brushing. A sisal brush is recommended for this. In addition, a hound glove can help to remove any dead fur during shedding season. Bathing is usually done only once or twice a year and a natural or pH-balanced shampoo is recommended.
The Best Kind of Home For a Basenji
Indoor living is best for a Basenji as long as it gets lots of opportunities to play, both indoors and outdoors. They are not particularly good with other pets, but can be tolerant of other dogs. A Basenji can be quite affectionate, but, don't expect them to spend their lives as a lap dog. This charming dog can work well for people who live in apartments and need a quiet dog.
Many people enjoy the uniqueness of a Basenji. This is not only because the breed doesn't bark, but because of its interesting personality. Sometimes referred to as feisty, the Basenji can make a great dog for someone who possesses patience and respects the Basenji's independence.
