Fans of the German Shepherd dog debate both sides of the case for whether a pure bred dog is better than a mixed breed and vice-versa. Both have their virtues.
The argument of pure or mixed breed is not one that will ever be won. Each type is generally more suited to one type of task or activity than the other. Within the range of dog behaviors there will also be variations for individual dogs. Pure Bred German Shepherd DogsShow dogs inevitably are pure breds though there are sometimes categories or events with opportunites for mixed breeds. Specialized dogs working for the police and military tend to be pure bred in the majority of cases. There have been many examples of successful mixed breed dogs being used as well, but there are usually stringent policies applied to determine their initial suitability for specialized roles. The German Shepherd dog is one of the most intelligent dogs, making it relatively easy to train and an excellent pet and/or guard dog as a consequence. Mixed Breed German Shepherd DogsGerman Shepherd mixes, as they are sometimes known, are just as good a pet as the pure German Shepherd and many owners with experience of them often seek a similar mix in their next dog. They can also be attractive-looking dogs depending on the genes in their parentage. Some mixes are quite common, for example German Shepherd and Boxer. The mixes of the larger breeds can be as intelligent and possibly even more athletic and energetic than the pure bred. As mixed breeds they will be generally less prone to conditions that can affect German Shepherds, such as hip dysplasia or skin infections. Mixed breed dogs do tend to be more robust and less prone to health issues than pure bred dogs. When behavior problems do occur with mixed breed dogs it is often with adult ones that have not been trained well when young. Though this could equally apply to any type of dog in a general sense, it is more probable that the history of a mixed breed is less well-known. This unknown aspect does increase the likelihood of training issues with the mixed rather than the pure bred. Mixed breeds from rescue centers can prove to be excellent pets or difficult, again based on their training and learned behaviors from young, though in these instances the unknown factors will almost inevitably be increased. Any difficulties can still be overcome through appropriate training in the majority of cases. Each To Their Own ChoiceThe fact is, that though the debate will continue, both pure bred German Shepherds and the mixed types will continue as well, both providing companionship and enjoyment for their keepers.
