Ok, so you've decided to get a dog...now what? Well, before you even begin looking for the right pup, make sure you decide on the breed that is right for you. Do research, ask questions and set the proper expectations - otherwise, you may end up with a pet that is not right for your personality or lifestyle.
If the Miniature Schnauzer has made it onto your list of potential breeds, then you most likely are looking for a small, spunky and intelligent pet that can be easily trained. Miniature Schnauzers definitely fit into that category.
Appearance
At 12 to 14 inches tall and 10 to 15 pounds, the Miniature Schnauzer is a small, compact and regal-looking dog best known for its long snout and scruffy beard and moustache. The breed's coat can be found in black, white, salt and pepper, or even silver. More often than not, the tail is docked and the ears are usually cropped.
Temperament
Feisty, affectionate and loyal are three words that accurately sum up the Miniature Schnauzer's personality. These little dogs are very friendly and obedient and, if properly socialized, get along well with children and other pets. Like most small dogs, however, the Miniature Schnauzer is completely unaware of his or her size and can attempt to boss around even much larger dogs. As a result, it is very important to socialize this breed as a puppy.
A typical terrier, the Miniature Schnauzer is very easy to train and aims to please his or her master. If left untrained, however, the breed can grow willful and stubborn. Potential owners should be aware that Miniature Schnauzers usually become very attached to their owners and can therefore develop separation anxiety when left alone for long periods of time. Additionally, the dogs are known for voicing their opinions (in other words, they bark a lot!).
Grooming and Exercise Needs
Although the breed is quite energetic, Miniature Schnauzers do not necessarily need a yard, a characteristic that makes them a great pet for apartment owners. They should, however, be taken on long walks daily.
Because they don't shed and are hypo-allergenic, Miniature Schnauzers are great for dog lovers with allergies. Their coat requires minimal grooming, but should be brushed daily in order to prevent matted fur. Professional grooming is recommended every 6 to 8 weeks.
Health
The Miniature Schnauzer is normally a very healthy breed. Rarely, some develop kidney stones, diabetes, and liver ailments. Also, because they tend to gain weight easily, owners must make sure the breed is not overfed. Typically, Miniature Schnauzers live 14-16 years and, throughout their lives, remain youthful in both their appearance and behavior.
To sum up, the Miniature Schnauzer makes an ideal pet for any owner who is on the lookout for an easily-trained companion that requires minimal exercise and grooming.
On the other hand, if you prefer dogs that don't bark a lot and will remain happy with minimal attention from their owner, you should probably pass on the Miniature Schnauzer.
