This 'King of the Toys' may seem small and insignificant but don't let its size fool you. Min Pins can be playful and sassy one minute and sweet and cuddly the next.

The Miniature Pinscher, sometimes called Min Pin for short, is a toy sized, sturdy, streamlined, shorthaired dog. This German breed is believed to be the result of Dachshund and Italian Greyhound crosses. They typically weigh between 6 and 12 pounds and come in colors of red, red with a mingling of black, black and tan, or chocolate and tan. Often referred to as ‘The King of Toys’, this breed earns every bit of the respect it gets. This little dog is described by the AKC as having ‘fearless animation, complete self-possession, and spirited presence.’

The breed may seem small and insignificant but don’t let its size fool you. This is not the dog for first time owners as it has a mind of its own and can be a challenge to obedience train. This dog requires firm but gentle guidance, along with a good sense of humor.

Miniature Pinschers are a tough little dog but their tiny structure can not take rough handling and they are known to bite in self defense. Min Pins usually have a cocky attitude and owners need to make sure their tiny dog does not get himself into trouble by attempting to put large dogs in their place. Many Min Pins like to rule their household and may do best as an only pet in a home without small children.

Min Pins can be playful and sassy one minute and sweet and cuddly the next. Thriving on love and attention, they will let you know they do not like being left alone for long periods by being destructive and yappy.

These dogs are high energy and will chase anything that runs. They are also outgoing and curious. As a result of these traits, many of them excel in agility. Best kept as house dogs with a secure fenced yard or leash for exercise, their environment must be doggy-proofed so that they can’t get into household cleaners, antifreeze, pins, needles, coins, medications, etc.

Min Pins are a hardy breed. A few may suffer from dislocation of the kneecap or leg injuries due to their fragile bone structure but Min Pins can live to be 15 to 16 years old. They require minimal grooming of brushing and rubdowns each week and infrequent baths.

In the right home, with a dedicated owner, these loyal and protective little dogs can be a joy to live with. Their sassy attitude and zest for life are an inspiration to those who love them. If you would like to add a Min Pin to your household, please consider adopting from your local shelter or breed rescue.

I've recently rescued a Min Pin named prior 'Cricket'. She's black and tan and an amazing dog. I've always had labs and one dauchshund named 'Tootsie' before getting little Cricket. At first I couldn't believe this 4 year old dog! She was acting like a puppy and constantly talking to me (Wow,wow, wow, erg) about whatever she wanted. Mainly food. I have a problem now that she's gained weight and has a habit of eating when I do. I've had her 3 months and just love her to bits. As I said she's amazing and quite the specimen..very stately and confident and loveable to the max and I do not want her to gain anymore and only want her to loose. Can someone tell me how to feed the little Angel and what type of dog food (dry or wet or mixed together) Right now I feed her Science Diet (dry) and let her have a bit of chicken broth on it twice a day; morning and dinner. She gets 3 walks a day and on the weekends I take her up to my north home in the woods and she runs free but doesn't like to be out there without me with her. (She looks up alot and I'm also wondering if these dogs know about eagle birds and could she be stolen from the air?) I just wanted to share my heart with all the Min Pin lovers out there. Cricket is the most loving, confident, playful dog I've ever had. I never new of this breed before just never paid much attention to the smaller dogs. What a mistake that was. She is the biggest dog in her heart and easy to travel with. She loves life and I love her!
